Should You Train While Fasting?

Part 4 of The Training Ground Guide to Fasting

One of the most common questions we hear from members who are fasting is:
"Should I train while fasting?"
Usually, the question is followed by one of two beliefs:
"Training fasted burns more fat."
Or:
"You'll lose all your muscle if you train without eating."
As you might have guessed by now, neither statement tells the full story.
Like most things in fitness, the answer depends on your goal.
The problem is that many people hear what works for someone else and assume it will work for them.
A bodybuilder preparing for a competition, an office worker trying to lose 10kg, a marathon runner, and a rugby player may all require different answers.
Let's look at what the research and real-world coaching experience actually tell us.
First, What Do We Mean By Fasted Training?
Fasted training simply means exercising after a period without eating.
For many people, this means:
Going for a morning walk before breakfast.
Completing a gym session before their first meal.
Training during an intermittent fasting window.
It doesn't automatically mean you've been fasting for 24, 48, or 72 hours.
Most people who talk about fasted training have simply skipped breakfast.
That's an important distinction.
Does Fasted Training Burn More Fat?
This is where most discussions begin.
And technically, the answer is often yes.
When you train in a fasted state, your body generally relies more heavily on stored fat for fuel during that session.
That sounds fantastic.
Until you zoom out and look at the bigger picture.
Fat burning during a workout and fat loss over weeks and months are not the same thing.
You can burn a higher percentage of fat during today's workout and still lose no body fat over the long term.
Likewise, you can eat before training and still lose significant amounts of body fat.
What ultimately matters is your overall energy balance over time.
This is one reason researchers consistently find that when calories and protein are matched, fasted and fed training often produce very similar fat-loss outcomes.
The body is smarter than most social media posts give it credit for.
Why Fasted Training Sometimes Feels Great
Many people genuinely enjoy training while fasted.
There are several possible reasons:
Less stomach discomfort
Greater convenience
Improved adherence to a fasting schedule
Increased alertness from caffeine
Personal preference
Some people simply don't like eating before exercise.
That's completely fine.
If performance remains strong and recovery remains good, there is often no reason to force a pre-workout meal.
This is particularly true for:
Walking <45 minutes
Easy cardio
General fitness training
Moderate gym sessions
Why Fasted Training Sometimes Feels Terrible
The opposite is also true.
Some people feel awful.
They experience:
Low energy
Reduced strength
Poor concentration
Dizziness
Early fatigue
This doesn't mean they're doing anything wrong.
It simply means their body may perform better with fuel available.
Remember:
Your goal isn't to win a fasting competition.
Your goal is to achieve the training outcome you're chasing.
If eating before training allows you to perform better, recover better, and enjoy the process more, that's valuable information.
What About Strength Training?
This is where nuance becomes particularly important.
Can you strength train while fasted?
Absolutely.
People do it every day.
Can you build muscle while training fasted?
Yes.
People do that as well.
However, when maximum muscle growth and performance become the priority, nutrition starts to matter more.
Muscle growth requires:
Sufficient training stimulus
Adequate protein
Adequate recovery
Enough total energy intake
Training completely fasted doesn't automatically stop muscle growth.
But if fasting causes you to:
Train less intensely
Lift less weight
Miss protein targets
Struggle with recovery
Then it may become a limiting factor.
This is why many strength athletes choose to eat before or shortly after training.
Not because fasted training is impossible.
Because performance matters.
What About Endurance Training?
Endurance athletes often use fasted training strategically.
Sometimes this is done to:
Improve comfort when training without food.
Develop selected metabolic adaptations.
Prepare for situations where access to fuel may be limited.
Learn how their body responds to different fuelling strategies.
However, fasted training should not be confused with practising race nutrition.
Athletes still need appropriately fuelled sessions to test what they will eat and drink during an event.
Elite endurance athletes don't perform every session fasted.
Far from it.
In fact, many of their highest-quality training sessions are heavily fuelled.
They understand an important principle:
Train for the adaptation you want.
If the goal is maximum performance, fuel appropriately.
If the goal is a specific metabolic adaptation, fasting may occasionally be useful.
The best endurance coaches don't treat every session the same.
The Biggest Mistake We See
People often assume:
Fasted = harder. Harder = better.
That's not always true.
Imagine two people.
Person A trains fasted and completes a mediocre workout.
Person B eats beforehand and produces better performance, greater training volume, and higher quality effort.
Who achieved the better training stimulus?
Almost certainly Person B.
The purpose of training is adaptation.
Not suffering.
Sometimes those overlap.
Often they don't.
Should You Do High-Intensity Training While Fasting?
This depends on the individual.
High-intensity work relies heavily on readily available energy.
Some people tolerate this extremely well.
Others notice a significant drop in performance.
If your sessions involve:
Sprinting
Heavy lifting
Competition preparation
High-intensity intervals
It may be worth experimenting with some nutrition beforehand and comparing results.
The answer is often found in your performance data rather than internet opinions.
What We Tell Members At The Training Ground
We don't start with the question:
"Should I train fasted?"
We start with:
"What is your goal?"
If your goal is:
General Health
Train whenever you're most likely to be consistent.
Fat Loss
Choose the approach that helps you maintain a sustainable calorie deficit.
Muscle Growth
Prioritise performance, protein intake, and recovery.
Sporting Performance
Fuel appropriately for the demands of the session.
Endurance Events
Use both fuelled and strategic fasted sessions where appropriate.
The best approach depends on the outcome you're chasing.
The Question Nobody Asks
A surprising number of people become interested in fasted training because they believe fasting itself is superior for fat loss.
That raises an important question.
If fat loss ultimately comes down to energy balance, is fasting actually better than simply controlling calories?

The Bottom Line
Can you train while fasting?
Absolutely.
Should you train while fasting?
Maybe.
Fasted training is not automatically better.
Fed training is not automatically better.
Both can be effective.
The best choice depends on:
Your goals
Your preferences
Your performance
Your recovery
Your ability to remain consistent

The goal is finding the strategy that allows you to train hard, recover well, and remain consistent for years rather than weeks.
